Turning Waste into Wealth: Launching Our Community-Based Initiative in Rusizi District

At the Jeannine and Emmanuel Foundation (JEF), we believe that environmental protection and economic empowerment are two sides of the same coin. Today, we are thrilled to officially announce the launch of our latest initiative: The Community-based Solid Waste Management Project for Livelihoods Improvement.

Based in the heart of the Rusizi District, specifically within the Muganza Sector and Mashyuza Parish, this project is designed as a pilot model to prove that sustainable waste management can create "wealth" for the most vulnerable members of our community.

The Vision: Waste as an Opportunity

For many, waste is a problem to be discarded. For JEF and our partners, waste is a resource waiting to be unlocked. In partnership with local stakeholders and the district leadership, we are building a system that combines environmental conservation with inclusive livelihood opportunities.

Our goal is simple but ambitious: to transform Rusizi into a model of circular economy where nothing goes to waste.

How We Are Making a Difference

This project isn't just about cleaning up the streets; it's about building people. We are focusing our efforts on five key areas of impact:

1. Empowering the Vulnerable

We are intentionally recruiting and training those who are often left behind in the traditional labor market, including out-of-school youth, teen mothers, and persons with hearing and speech disabilities. By providing them with green jobs in waste collection and recycling, we are offering more than just a paycheck—we are offering dignity and a path to independence.

2. From Waste to Harvest

A major component of this project is household waste segregation. By teaching families to separate organic waste at the source, we can transform that waste into high-quality compost. This compost then returns to the soil, supporting sustainable agriculture and helping local farmers increase their yields without expensive chemical fertilizers.

3. Creating Green Jobs

Through structured waste collection and innovative recycling partnerships, we are creating sustainable employment. These "green jobs" ensure that environmental care becomes a permanent, economically viable part of the Rusizi District's infrastructure.

4. Investing in the Next Generation

Environmental responsibility starts early. We are working directly with local schools to educate children about hygiene, waste separation, and their vital role as stewards of their surroundings. We believe that an environmentally conscious child today becomes a responsible, proactive citizen tomorrow.

A Sustainable Model for Rural Rwanda

This initiative serves as a pilot to test, learn, and scale a "waste-to-wealth" model that can eventually be implemented across rural Rwanda. By addressing interconnected challenges—youth unemployment, social exclusion, and environmental degradation—we are building a system that allows communities to thrive long after the initial project phase is complete.

Join Us on the Journey

The seeds of lasting change are being planted today in Rusizi. Whether you are a local resident, a potential partner, or a global supporter, there is a place for you in this mission.

Communities that care for their environment build stronger futures. Together, we are proving that waste is not the end—it is only the beginning of new opportunities.
